My advice is to not use 'Save on Exit' and use Core/Game overrides for changes you want to add to the controls. If you want to have a global configuration setting applied to all Libretro cores, open RetroArch from the RetroPie system in Emulationstation, make your changes there (it will modify the global RetroArch config file) and use Save Configuration to save those changes. More details about the configuration structure used by RetroArch in RetroPie can be found here.

So I figured it out I believe. You were right on with my joystick. It was mounted opposite of the other one. I also realized that the reason the start button just stopped working is because the master controller which as you say there is only one for now. Is the other controller so it works in menu but not in game. Which makes sense now knowing the retroarch and all hotkeys only apply to the master. Thanks for the insight

I can strongly recommend the Crush Pinball series, especially Alien Crush and Devil's Crush (Devil Crash in Japan) for the PC Engine / Turbografx-16. They're often mentioned as maybe the best pinball console games ever made.

Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies are also worth a look. The Amiga versions may be the best because of the music, but the console versions are also quite good as far as I tested them.

I didn't notice any problems running any of them on my non-overclocked Pi 3b non-plus except for the Amiga versions, because I my Pi is only used for arcade and console emulation.

@grant2258 Aliexpress has cheap prices, if you have patience waiting for them to arrive..lol..I have bought some stuff from there for bartop I am in the process of building, but have heard mixed reviews regarding their electronics. My purchases weren't electronic related (speakers..power cord for my amp..and some purchases for my woman). Just wanted to comment about the long waits..haha.

@ivankahl What image are you installing? How did you install it? This matters because nobody can second guess a third party and the current image is 4.4 - you say 4.1?? Only the official image is supported. Second, you cannot use a charger to reliably power a raspberry pi, especially that one as you need a minimum of 2.5A at 5V. Finally, which SNES emulator are you using, there are 7!?

@redrumpanda Some things you can't dumb down much further, and the Wiki is already written (mostly) to be understood by laymen. But you'll need to be willing to learn and that always requires some time and effort.

Let's start by collecting more information:

Which operating system is on your Laptop? Are your Pi and Laptop connected via network?

accept analouge input by switching the dragonrise mode to analogue...

when the light is orange/red its in analog mode when its green its digital. if you want a true analog control you are probably going to have to add a analog sensor of some sort to it though. The mode button press changes this

There are just so many options and ideas to consider. The hat is interesting. It is more than just a convenient way to connect wires for controls. It also has an audio DAC and back powers the Pi with a safe shutdown switch. If you are using an HDMI display with sound, you probably won't use the DAC on the hat.

You could also look at ControlBlock.

These solutions rely on drivers to translate GPIO input to virtual gamepad(s) or keyboard input. You could also step up to a hardware controller like an Ultimarc IPAC or others.

If I built a bartop today, I might simply use header wires or split a ribbon cable with a connector and use that to wire up controls to GPIO. I might then use a Mausberry circuit or something simpler to do safe shutdown. Finally, I might just pull audio from the jack on the Pi if my display did not include speakers.

For the actual controls, do you want a ball top style joystick? A bat design (street fighter shape)? Have you considered 4-way vs. 8-way? Ultimarc makes some sticks that allow you to switch between 4 and 8 ways. Otherwise, the HAPP Super or the Competition sticks are very inexpensive.

There are many sources of arcade hardware online. I have had success buying from Groovy Game Gear, Ultimarc, and Paradise Arcade shop. I live in Portland, OR.

I will add that sometimes you will make a decision based on form factor alone. For example, you may be building something with internal size constraints and opt for buttons that are shallow, whereas many arcade buttons are designed to go through thicker plywood and go pretty deep.

On the other hand, you might pick a joystick because of how it feels during gameplay. Do you like microswitches clicking? Maybe you want to find one with copper leaf switches for that quieter, smoother feel. You have lots of possibilities. I would browse some Paradise for ideas, or Ultimarc for some premium options and decide what you need and what you can live without given your budget.

Problem is this. 3rd Party images are not supported. You should ask MLP as nobody can predict the setup. Also, https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first - you dont even say what version of Mame? Reimage, post details of your setup and help becomes possible.

Yesterday I turned on the RPi without any USB controller plugged in. The arcade controls worked perfectly in ES. I runned a Megadrive game and the arcade controls were recognized as player two. I wasn't able to go back to ES with start-select on the arcade controls. When I plugged in the USB SNES controller I could go back to ES with start-select on that controller.

      Any way to "fix" this?

@akav05 I jus back round to trying to figure this out and thanks from the help on another thread I was able to get it to work. My game was Pinball Mania on MAME and through the MAME settings it’s possible to using any button for player 1 regardless of it being from the player 1 or player 2 controllers. I do not know if that’s possible with all systems but in case it worked perfect when playing the game on MAME

@TMNTturtlguy I don't have a cabinet yet but I've thought about this on and off. I think you have a good compromise there, and swapping A and C might be a good experiment.

This old thread may be helpful:

@TMNTturtlguy Effectively i have thought about it and it is a good idea, but i have already one usb port used by my keyboard, another one by my hard disk, and i would like to keep 2 usb ports free. It would let me to eventually connect other devices such as bluetooth guns (to play "time crisis" for instance) or to add 2 more arcade joystick for 4 players game and so on. I could use a usb HUB to do all theses things but i dont want to add too many intermediate electronic composants to the chanel. Either way if it had been the only solution, i will have chosen this method :)

And if someone who reads this topics has the same issues that i have encountered, i'm hoping he will follow your advice. That's the easiest way too do. I think. ^^

Thank you for everything my friend. Cheers from France
